»Responsible Research and Innovation is a transparent, interactive process by which societal actors and innovators become mutually responsive to each other with a view to the (ethical) acceptability, sustainability and societal desirability of the innovation process and its marketable products. (…) The idea is clear; to steer the innovation process towards societal beneficial objectives.« René von Schomberg

In a dynamically evolving and knowledge-driven society, impulses driven by a wide range of different perspectives are the engine of innovation. In view of this, the early inclusion of stakeholders from research, business, politics and society are becoming increasingly important in research and innovation processes.

When developing effective, sustainable future solutions, key factors to consider include future use options as well as societal needs, concerns and values. Hence research and innovation require also a dialogue with society. The Fraunhofer Center for Responsible Research and Innovation (CeRRI) develops new approaches and methods that allow research agendas and technology development processes to focus on societal demands from the very start.

Responsible research and innovation is oriented towards participation. Sustainable solution approaches to effectively deal with social challenges nowadays can only be defined and implemented by including all relevant stakeholders. In cooperation with our clients and project partners we develop tailored analyses, innovative process models and individualized solution approaches for current challenges and issues relevant for the future.

Four expert teams help harness the potential of diversity for successful future design: Need-Oriented Research Planning, Process Design and Transformative Methods, Diversity and Change and Technology Transfer Research.

Our interdisciplinary team combines knowledge and skills from the natural sciences, economics, design, communication, social sciences and computer science.

We advise organizations and companies as to how they can initiate and implement change processes in their organizational culture in order to achieve more diversity and use its potential for their benefit. Through our method-supported approach we can so clearly convey future solutions in the run-up to research agendas and technology development that innovation potential and need scenarios come alive even for non-experts.

  • We deal with the various perspectives of social challenges in a variety of subject areas and fields of research.
  • We develop new approaches and methods so that future topics with innovative potential and research or project plans focus on social requirements from the very start.
  • We rely on cooperation with a new constellation of stakeholders.
  • Through our scientifically based work we enable the strategic utilization of diversity to successfully shape the future.

Our aim is to develop innovative technologies, products, services, models and strategies accepted by society. The target audience of our work includes foundations, companies, organizations, universities, associations and research institutions.
